Why everyone wants luxury vinyl flooring

Luxury vinyl (LVF) has it all, from the high-end style to waterproof capabilities and countless other functional characteristics. Shoppers, more and more, are looking for value, and one would be hard-pressed to find something that doesn't offer more value for the decorating dollar. Read further to see why this may be for you.

An affordable luxury

Although it is considered a premium product, LVF is genuinely budget-friendly. True--to-life images of wood, stone, and tile are taken with 3D photography and have clarity and vibrancy with knots, swirls, grains, and veining variations in view. The tile-sized pieces are available in chevron, herringbone, colorful geometrics, encaustic style, and filigree patterns, all of which can be mixed and matched to create a personalized design. Stone looks are available in marble, granite, travertine, quartz, slate, limestone, and terrazzo images.

The floors also have micro beveling and embossing to add depth, dimension, and textured appearances such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, and distressed. For even more realism, the design option has the material cut into planks to mimic hardwood boards, called vinyl plank flooring, or square pieces to echo stone and tile, called LVT flooring. Some even go so far as to use grout with the tile-sized pieces.

Standing up to any amount of wear

While all vinyl is strong, true LVF is much thicker than a standard sheet with a density of at least 8-mm; however, the more robust the surface, the better it can hide subfloor imperfections and be quieter, so you might consider going up to 10-mm or even 12-mm. The material also has several layers, including a top clear melamine wear coating that protects against scratches and scuffs, which gives it a semi-rigid feeling. As a result, this is considered one of the most kid-and-pet-friendly floorings available.

The product is easy to care for with daily sweeping and periodic mopping with a manufacturer-approved cleaner. Please avoid wax, shine-promoting substances because there's a high-shine urethane finish on top of the wear layer, which those cleaners can damage and cause dulling. Installation can be a floating floor where the pieces click and mat, then hover over the subfloor without nails or glue.
