Countertops

All about countertops

They set the tone for the entire room, whether you want a bold and vivid focal point or a quiet and serene space. Countertops also have to be durable, heat resistant, easy to clean and have plenty of storage and resistance to mold, mildew, and bacteria. They're a significant investment, and costly part of a kitchen remodel, second only to the cabinets.

Colors and options galore

Counters now come in countless colors, patterns, and textures with choices that can address any style and decor. These include stones, such as granite countertops, durable (granite is known as the hardest rock) and heat-resistant, and have a luxurious, opulent feeling. Soapstone, another natural stone is usually dark gray with a smooth, silky surface; it's rising in popularity in both historic and modern homes with color that darkens over time, forming an antique-like patina that can be very visually appealing. As for marble, just the very word evokes thoughts of lavish palaces. This has a distinctive veining that you'll never see in anyone else's home.

Tiled countertops are stylish, durable, and easy to clean and will always be a primary choice. Laminates, once thought of as budget, ordinary products, enjoy a new reputation because of their thousands of colors, patterns, and styles. Other selections include solid surfacing and acrylic blend with a marble look and stainless steel, which gives an urban, sleek look. Wood is always warm and traditional.

Quartz countertops: an Italian lineage

Over the past 50 years, this has acquired a reputation as a high-end product. While quartz is a natural stone, it is engineered with about seven percent of resins and binders. The result is a quartzite countertop that is ultra-hard, completely nonporous, antimicrobial, and easy to clean. Please make no mistake, though: It still has that beautiful, almost three-dimensional appearance and natural luster for which natural stone is so well known. If anything, appearance is enhanced with more color and edge treatment availability.
