Bathroom remodel in Fort Smith, AR from Fort Smith Flooring Group

Tile types to use in a bathroom remodel

There are two kinds of bathroom tiles you'll see most often. They include porcelain and the 4 X 4 ceramic squares, but another type of ceramic is now gaining popularity: tiny, durable, and highly decorative mosaic tiles. Bathrooms are where we start and end our day and are also sanctuaries where you can relax and unwind. They are becoming more and more sophisticated, luxurious rooms with marble floors, custom showers, glass block walls, as other non-ceramic tiles including, concrete and natural stone.

Porcelain tile: waterproof, hard-wearing, and glamorous

This type of ceramic is made up of nonporous clay, sand, and glass, making it heavier, denser, and ideal for busy rooms like the bath. This is a large format tile and can come in sizes ranging from 8 X 10 and up, comes in an almost unlimited number of colors, patterns, and styles, and can be made to look like anything, including wood, stone, fabric, or leather looks. That makes it just as ideal for any other room and on walls and tub/shower surrounds.

4 X 4 squares: perfect for backsplashes

They can be used on moderately heavy foot trafficked floors, but you’ll also see these squares in a tile backsplash, creating focal points, borders, and medallions. They are thinner but, when glazed, have a hard outer coating that is waterproof and come in countless colors, patterns, designs, shapes, and sizes, all of which can be mixed and matched to create a unique design.

Also seen is a natural stone, such as marble, granite, slate, quartz, travertine, limestone, and terrazzo slabs. These are also ideal for baths because they are robust, durable, and often heat resistant, an essential trait for the bathroom. Always ask about sealing requirements, as some are more porous than others.
